CHICKASAW COUNTY HISTORY

Chickasaw County, Mississippi, is named for the great Chickasaw Indian Nation which once occupied these hills of Northeast Mississippi. The Treaty of Pontotoc Creek made this area a part of the United States in 1832.  The formation of Chickasaw County by the Mississippi legislature occurred on February 9, 1836. Houston became the county seat. Col. Joel Pinson donated the land for the town of Houston on the condition that it be named for his dear friend, Sam Houston.
